The Equestrian Giant Spider is the largest known species of spider in Equestria, easily capable of exceeding ponies in size. They are also incredibly durable, known to be able to withstand powerful spells with little to no damage. These traits alone make them dangerous to equine kind, but what’s worse is that they are usually every bit as intelligent as a pony. However, their danger is limited as they only prefer to live where ponies will not reside. They prefer to live in the deepest, darkest parts of forests or caves where the trees grow the thickest and strongest. It is within these trees that they weave their webs, which serve as their homes. Ponies will not normally venture or live here due to other dangerous creatures that live in such areas, but the spider’s fearsome appearance and strength usually renders them immune to the local wildlife.
It is typical for several spiders to live in the same area as they enjoy one another’s company, though there are a few who prefer to remain solitary. In spite of the small size of these ‘spider settlements’ and their relative rarity, they seem to cover a wide area of Equestria. Each cluster of spiders can be vastly different from another in terms of general size, temperament, and culture. Some can be reasoned with, others are absolutely hostile. A very rare few will be outright friendly to ponies. Each cluster has a leader who is elected based on popular vote, or in the case of the more seedy and brutal clans, simply fights and bullies his or her way to the top. The attitude of the leader normally influences the entirety of the colony and their outlook toward their neighbors. Most, however, will answer to the Spider Monarch, a spider born of their royal family and reins over the whole species.
Most of these ‘clans’ will remain indifferent to ponies unless provoked. This was the agreement made between King Weaver and Princess Celestia eight-hundred years ago. So long as ponies and spiders managed to get along without offending the other and leave the other be, neither would try to attack the other. As a token of good faith, Celestia had Canterlot’s finest jewelers produce a magnificent crystal ball of exceeding brilliance and clarity. Called ‘Weaver’s Orb’, it is still the most coveted of all the spider’s treasures.
One of the largest of the spider settlements is located within the Everfree Forest. It is here that the current king of these creatures, Aahg, rules from a thicket adorned with beautiful webs. In the center of the largest web woven between a circle of trees, suspended in an intricate net, is Weaver’s Orb, which still gleams as wonderfully as it did when it was first presented to Aahg’s ancestor. Aahg is immensely proud of it and personally sees to keeping it clean and mending the webs it hangs from.
